II.Thisthenbeing,Itrust,clear,ournextsubjectwillbetheobjectoftheministry;andthisistaughtveryclearlyinthewords,— “Thep.52ministryofreconciliation.”ThereconciliationofthesinnertoGodisthegreatresult,toattainwhichGodfoundedtheministry.Thequestionhasbeenraisedwhether,bythereconciliationherementioned,ismeantthereconciliationofGodtothesinner,orthereconciliationofthesinnertoGod.Surelybothareincluded.Inourguiltyandruinedconditionthereisadoubleenmity.Man,throughhiscorruption,isatenmitywithGod;andGod,throughHisrighteousness,isatenmitywithrebelliousman.Andasthereisadoubleenmitythroughsin,so,likewise,isthereadoublereconciliationthroughChrist.God,Hislawbeingsatisfied,isreconciledtothesinner;andthesinner,hisheartbeingchanged,isreconcileduntoGod.

This,then,beingthecase,weseeatoncewhythereisnotmoreself-sacrificeforGod.Thereasonclearlyis,thatthereisawantofthedeepsenseofmercy.ThesacrificeofChristisnotsufficientlyrealised,andtheresultisthattheself-sacrificeiswithheld.Ifearthereisagreatwantofself-sacrificeevenamongthosewhoholdthetruth.Surelytherearemanywhosereligionnevercoststhemanyrealpersonalself-denial.Theypassthroughlifeeasilyandrespectably,butrefermattersmoretotheirp.44owninclinationthantothecallofGod.Theyaremorereadytopayotherstoworkthantoworkthemselves,andarepronetostandalooffromdistastefulservice,if,astheysay,itdoesnotsuitthem;or,astheymightsay,theydonotlikeit.So,again,butfewdenythemselvesingiving,andthoughmanyareliberal,therearefewwhosepersonalcomfortsarereallydiminishedbytheirliberality.Now,whyisthis?andhowisitthatthegreatsalvationhasnotmorepoweroverus?Isitnotthatthesalvationitselfisnotenoughfeltandappreciated?Itistrueofus,asitwasoftheCorinthians,that“weknowthegraceofourLordJesusChrist,who,thoughHewasrich,yetforoursakesbecamepoor,thatwethroughHispovertymightberich.”Butthoughweknowit,wedonotdeeplyfeelit.Itislikepaintlyingonthesurface,butitisnotburntintous,soastobecomepartandparcelofourselves.Everythingmaybecorrect;ourdoctrinescriptural,andourprinciplessound:butneitheronenortheotherhasgonehometotheinmostsoulwithsuchpowerthatwehavelearnedto“countallthingsbutlossfortheexcellencyoftheknowledgeofChristJesusourLord.”Whatisit,then,thatwewant?Whatp.45mustlieattherootofall?Amorepowerfulsenseofmercy,adeeperconvictionofneed,aclearerperceptionofwhatChristhasdoneforus,amorethoroughappreciationofHisperfectsacrifice;andwhenthatisgiven,weshallbebetterabletounderstandtheappeal,— “Ibeseechyoutherefore,brethren,bythemerciesofGod,thatyepresentyourbodiesalivingsacrifice,holy,acceptableuntoGod,whichisyourreasonableservice.”I.Thecontrast.
